Congressman Pat Fallon Leads Strategic Petroleum Reserve Letter

Earlier today, Congressman Pat Fallon (TX-04) led 6 of his colleagues in a letter to President Biden. The letter addresses the release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) that was sent to China, among other nations. China received nearly a million barrels of taxpayer-funded emergency oil from the SPR and continues to grow its reserves.

Co-Signers: Reps. Steube (FL-17)Biggs (AZ-5)Norman (SC-5)LaTurner (KS-2)Ronny Jackson (TX-13), and Glenn Grothman (WI-6).

Congressman Fallon issued the statement below:

“Our Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) was created to address national or weather emergencies, not for political expediency and personal profit. Joe Biden’s recent releases of America’s SPR to China are deeply concerning. Not only was it reported that he sent roughly 1 million barrels to UNIPEC – a Chinese based company, but it has also been cited that he released 4 million more barrels to Chinese entities in the fall. Joe Biden has taken these inappropriate steps as China continues to build their own reserve capabilities with cheap Russian and Iranian oil.

This is deeply concerning and deserves robust investigation. I thank my colleagues for joining me in this effort and I look forward to the Administration’s response.”

Congressman Norman added:

“Our strategic reserves are for national security, not to satisfy global oil markets, and certainly not to cover for President Biden’s failed energy policies. This administration owes our nation immediate answers to these questions, and I want to thank Rep. Fallon for his leadership on this important issue.”

Congressman LaTurner had this to say:

"The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is for national emergencies and natural disasters. Instead, the Biden Administration continues to use the SPR as a band-aid for their failed energy agenda. As a result, the reserve has dipped to its lowest level since 1986. To make matters worse, President Biden exported millions of barrels of oil from the SPR to Communist China. These reckless actions threaten our national security and do nothing to lower gas prices for Kansans."

Congressman Jackson said:

“The American people can’t afford to put gas in their tanks and our Strategic Petroleum Reserve is at its lowest level in decades, yet Joe Biden is wasting our money and resources by sending oil that’s intended for emergencies to the Chinese Communist Party. Helping our adversaries and setting America up for failure in the event of a major disaster or national security threat is no way for an American president to govern. Taxpayers deserve better. Congressman Fallon and I won’t stop until we all get the answers we deserve.”
